LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) MARIONETTEN-THEATER. 1910.
26x363/4 inches. Hollerbaum & schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: creases and overpainting in margins and image.
In 1910 Bernhard was commissioned to design three posters for the Berlin venue of the Münchener Künstler Marionetten Theatre (Munich Theater of Marionette Arts); one in a vertical format, showing a highway robber, and two horizontal posters, both designed to look like a stage. Of these two horizontal posters, one features the image of an elegant lady puppet on the right side of poster, and the other is the one we offer here, featuring a noble man kneeling on the left side. The rendering is pure Bernhard modernism, with flat tones and no outlining and it is a refreshing deviation from what could have been a very classically designed image. Wember p. 189 no. 70, DFP-III 177.
