LUCIAN BERNHARD (1883-1972) MARIONETTEN-THEATER. 1910.
26x37 inches, 66x94 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: light vertical and horizontal folds; creases and minor restoration in image.
In 1910, Bernhard was commissioned to design three posters for the Berlin venue of the Münchener Künstler Marionetten Theater (Munich Theater of Marionette Arts); one in a vertical format, showing a highway robber, and two horizontal posters, both designed to look like a stage. Of these two horizontal posters, one features the image of an elegant female puppet on the right side of poster, and the other is this one, featuring a noble man kneeling on the left side. The rendering is pure Bernhard modernism, with flat tones and no outlining, and it is a refreshing departure from what could have been a very classically designed image. Wember p. 189 no. 70, DFP-III 177.
