LUCIANO ACHILLE MAUZAN (1883-1952) PARFUMES GRIET. 1930.
50 7/8x36 5/8 inches. Affiches Mauzan, Florida.
Condition A-: abrasions, creases and minor tears in margins; minor stain in image; vertical fold.
Mauzan, who was born in France, emigrated to Italy just before the outbreak of the First World War. Once there, he quickly established himself as a successful poster artist, designing hundreds of movie posters. In 1927, he emigrated once again, this time to Argentina, a country with no tradition of quality advertising. Mauzan literally introduced the country to the modern poster. Throughout Mauzan's prodigious outpouring of images, his humorous, colorful and efficient posters are all immediately identifiable. Yet they seldom reach the aesthetic excellence of this torrid, sensuous, pale-skinned brunette. Here, to complement the alluring image, Mauzan's use of the sharp yellows and reds were perfectly matched to the Argentine consciousness. A local Argentine magazine Boletin explained "this poster had an extraordinary effect in the street . . . can you find a more suggestive evocation for a perfume?" Mauzan / Musee de l'affiche p. 51, Mauzan / Catalogue Raisonne p. 157.
