Drawing showcasing Bemelmans' two most beloved characters: Madeline and Pepito, the son of the Spanish Ambassador. Pepito first appeared in the 1956 book Madeline and the Bad Hat. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Bemelmans frequently created drawings and paintings of his characters, which were sold through Hammer Galleries in New York City.
