Additional Details

a charming illustration from bemelmans's final madeline book showing Miss Clavel bidding her charges good night. The image reflects the famous opening line of the first Madeline book: 'In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines / Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines / In two straight lines they broke their bread / And brushed their teeth and went to bed..."
In the printed book, the caption is altered from the one here. There it reads: "Everyone had been well fed" which is similar to the caption in the preceding original illustration (lot 4). Bemelmans's written caption on this piece is printed beneath the following image in the book showing Pepito sleeping.
