Bemelmans won the Caldecott Medal for Madeline's Rescue (1953). Marina is a lesser known but no less delightful picture book about the rescue of a baby seal from a shark by six clown porpoises. On August 19, 1961, Bemelmans wrote his friend Elizabeth Weicker that he thought Marina was "about the best story for kids I have written next to Madeline."
