DEUTSCHE LUFTHANSA. 1936.

26 3/4x18 inches, 68x45 3/4 cm. Chromolith-Kunstanstalt., Munich.
Condition B+: small replaced losses in corners; repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; minor creases and abrasions at edges and in image; margins trimmed off.

A Junkers JU 52 flying over the Olympic flag and Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. The figure in the foreground is based on a 1914 statue of German aviator Otto Lilienthal, a pioneer of early aviation who was known as the "Glider King." Here, the statue is shown with a laurel wreath to signify the games. In spite of its Olympic references, this rare poster is not an official Olympic poster. It uses the Olympic Games to advertise Germany's national airline as a means of traveling to the competition. The two most famous Olympic posters from the 1936 games were the one designed by Hohlwein for the Winter Olympics, and Franz Würbel's classic image for the Berlin Summer Olympics. Hohlwein / Stuttgart 410, Hohlwein / Munich 318.4, Gallo p. 233, not in Olympics.
