LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) CAFE ODEON UND BILLARD AKADEMIE. 1908.
463/4x35 inches. G. Schuh, Munich.
Condition B: restored losses and repaired tears in margins; creases in image; vertical and horizontal folds.
A supreme demonstration of his flat-color, no outlining style, Hohlwein shows a dandy sitting at the edge of a billiard table being served by a young, liveried black boy. Hohlwein's elegance and style of technique reflects the elegance and style of turn-of-the-century European gentry, and his geometric handling and graphic medley of straight lines create a powerful graphic that is a classic example of his signature style. At the time, and until the 1950's, it was standard for the more aristocratic clubs to have blacks, dressed in colorful costumes, as their waiters. Hohlwein frequently used the image of the 'little black servant' in his posters. Hohlwein, p. 138 no. 117, DFP-III 1333
