LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) CAFE PLENDL. 1911.
47x35 3/4 inches, 119 1/2x90 1/2 cm. G. Schuh, Munich.
Condition B+: staining in bottom margin; minor restoration along right edge; vertical and horizontal folds; scratches in image.
In a stylized modernity that seems to presage the Art Deco movement, Hohlwein has created an enviable vision of upper-class civility with three elegant people sitting at a table in this self-proclaimed "first class cafe." The captivating element of this design is the combination of the detailed renderings of the faces and Hohlwein's broad outlining of the table and clothes. Added to this is the Hohlwein touch of the finely worked patterned background which adds movement and life to the poster. DFP III, 1389; Hohlwein/Stuttgart, ss; PAI-VI, 127.
