LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) DAMENCONFECTIONSHAUS MAYER SUNDHEIMER. 1909.
49x36 1/8 inches. Vereinigte Druckereien & Kunstanstalten, Munich.
Condition B+: paper bubbling, repaired tears, creases and extensive overpainting in margins and image.
This masterpiece of graphic design is one of Hohlwein's most modernist creations. It is composed of two squares, one containing the image, and the other a perfectly balanced block of sans serif typography. It is a simple and pure design, exuding strength and sensitivity; an incredible achievement within a single image. The image of the roses reappeared in several other posters Hohlwein designed (Stiller Shoes, Rosenfest etc), and was also used on invitations and catalogue covers for this women's clothing store. Hohlwein 152, DFP III 352, Wember 412, Frenzel tafel 5.
