LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) ISIDOR BACH. 1912.
47x35 inches, 119 1/2x89 cm. Kunstanstalt Graphia, Munich.
Condition B+: replaced losses and slight darkening in margins; repaired tears at edges, some into image; creases, minor abrasions and restoration in margins and along horizontal fold.
An avid hunter and great lover of the outdoors, Hohlwein was commissioned to design posters by many tailors specializing in sporting clothes. In Berlin, he worked for Hermann Hoffman, and in Munich his artwork advertised Hermann Scherrer, Johann Zahne and Isidor Bach. This poster is a wonderful graphic snapshot of three generations of an affluent family disembarking from a train, getting ready to hike in the mountains. From their lederhosen to their Loden coats and backpacks, they are outfitted in clothes from Isidor Bach. DFP-III 1423, Hohlwein / Dover p. 5, Hohlwein / Stuttgart 78, Hohlwein 178-42.
