LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) JOHANN ZEHME. 1906.
42 3/4x30 inches, 109x76 cm. Bayer, Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears and time staining in margins; creases and abrasions in image; sharp vertical and horizontal folds.
Hohlwein was a passionate equestrian and hunter and many of his earliest commissions were associated with those pasttimes. These include an exquisite, small series of images he designed for the tailor Hermann Scherrer (See Swann Art Nouveau Poster Auction #2099, lot 102) and this rare image for a firm that manufactured hats for hunting, shooting and touring. Hohlwein uses flat tones in an autumnal palette of greens and browns, and employs his sophisticated technique of outlining and playing with light and shadow to convey the subject. Hohlwein / Munich 98, Hohlwein / Stuttgart p. 125, DFP-III 1321.
