LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) MOTORENFABRIK OBERURSEL. Circa 1914.
341/4x261/2 inches. Kornsand & Co., Frankfurt.
Condition A-: minor repaired tear in top margin; crease in image; sharp horizontal fold. Framed.
Hohlwein produced posters promoting just about every mode of transportation: automobiles, bicycles, ships, and early aviation events and plane manufacturers (see Swann Auction # 1991 lot 50). For this poster, which pre-dates the First World War, he is advertising a company that produces airplane engines. Unlike most of his other posters for planes, this image depicts the airship (a Fokker E-III) on the ground, undergoing the close scrutiny and implied approval of two soldiers and an aviator. In Hohlwein's classic style the image is rendered without outlines and brilliantly plays with shadow effects. Hohlwein/Stuttgart 159.
