LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN / NACH NORD - AMERIKA. Circa 1928.
27x17 1/4 inches, 68x44 cm. H. M. Hauschild, Bremen.
Condition B+: restored losses in margins; repaired tears and restoration in margins and image.
Although unsigned, this is undoubtedly the work of Ludwig Hohlwein, executed in his immediately recognizable style. Hohlwein designed several posters for the German shipping line, Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen, but this is his only poster to depict the New York City skyline. The Woolworth Building, the Singer Building (demolished in 1968), the City Investing Tower, The Hudson Terminal and the Equitable Building are all visible. As the image does not include silhouettes of either the Chrysler Building or the Empire State Building, it is likely that the poster was printed prior to their construction. Not in Hohlwein, not in Hohlwein / Stuttgart. rare
