LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) RIQUET-TEE.
43 3/4x29 3/4 inches. Emil Gerasch, Leipzig.
Condition A: minor repaired tears in margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
Riquet, purveyors of exotic chocolates and teas, was one of Hohlwein's biggest clients. In the many posters he designed for the firm he would always strive to depict exotic images connected to the countries from which the products were imported. Here, against a sharp yellow background, in front of an exotic blue plant, he represents a statue of Buddha. The image is infused with drama thanks to the lighting which Hohlwein creates using his unique strokes-of-color treatment. This specific image does not seem to have surfaced before.
