LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) SPRINGER & MÖLLER.
33x23 1/4 inches, 85x59 cm. Gedruckt Mit Unseren Offsetfarben, Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; staining in margins and image.
In an advertisement for Springer-Moller, Hohlwein projects an air of upper-class refinement to promote the renowned German paint and print manufacturer. An elegantly dressed woman admires a book of paint samples, which fall in a kaleidoscope of color around her body. Along with the complementary yellow dress and bright purple hair, Hohlwein uses flat and geometric shapes of striking color to further embolden the image, with a cascade of color creating a sense of movement and depth. During the Second World War, Springer-Möller was on the Allies' list of targets to bomb; they played a very important part in the war effort, printing important documents and highly classified detailed maps for the Nazis.
