LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) SUMMER IN GERMANY. 1927.
48x34 1/4 inches. Herm. Sonntag, Munich.
Condition B+: restoration and minor losses in lower left margin; mnior tears and crease at edges. Framed.
An elegant, quiet, even peaceful image of a couple enjoying the waning light of a summer's day in Germany. In the 1920s, one of Hohlwein's recognizable design traits was to create a sense of depth in his posters by using a warm-colored background and a dark, colder color in the foreground. It also helped highlight individual characters or groups of figures within his designs. Hohlwein designed several travel posters for Germany based on the seasons, and this image is most often seen with German text. This rare, English variant, employs a line from Mark Twain, "Summer in Germany is the perfection of the beautiful."
