LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949)

EDINBURGH / IT'S QUICKER BY RAIL. Circa 1933.

39 1/4x49 1/2 inches, 99 1/2x125 3/4 cm. John Waddington, Leeds.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image and along vertical fold; pin holes with some rust-staining in corners. Framed.

The "Old City" of Edinburgh, with Edinburgh Castle in the background. Considered a master of modern graphic design, Hohlwein "first studied as an architect, and this is reflected in his superb sense of layout and visual balance" (Railway p. 133). "This joint LNER/LMS poster issued by the LNER dates to around 1933 (when the slogan 'It's Quicker By Rail' was adopted)" (Furness vol. 1 p. 41). A rare image, and one of only three posters Hohlwein designed for the British Rail companies. Furness vol. 1, p. 41.
