LUDWIG HOHLWEIN VOLKSSPENDE. 1918.
34 5/8x22 1/8 inches. Wusten & Co., Franfurt.
Condition A-: minor tear in bottom image; vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.
"People's Charity for German Prisoners of War and Civil Internees." A soldier in black, with gray outline and red highlights, behind black bars. Darracott refers to this as "One of Hohlwein's best known designs" (Darracott p. xix), and indeed, this "counterhero--brave, but now powerless" (Paret p. 91) presents an emotional appeal that must have been near irresistible in post-war Germany. Paret 130, Rawls 42, Darracott 20, IWM p. 34.
