LUDWIG HOLWEIN (1874-1949) ATLAS-SALATOELE. 1910.
42 3/4x29 1/2 inches. G. Schuh, Munich.

Without a doubt Hohlwein is one of the most important and prolific poster designers of the century. He spent his life in Munich, where he was born, doing most of his work for local advertisers. He was an incredible draughtsman and no subject seemed to be a problem for him: he could draw animals and elegant people with the same ease as still-lives and landscapes. The pieces we offer here are all from his first period, before the First World War, and are all very rare. He was a master colorist, using flat planes of color with no outlining to delineate figures, while playing with light and shadow to build sophisticated graphics. This poster presents a little girl dressed as a cook gazing at a large bottle of salad oil, against a flat, dark background. It is a simple and obvious image, with Hohlwein's sensible, and always legible, typography arrayed across the top and bottom. DFP III, 1383, Hohlwein pl. 19.
