Ladislaus "Ludwig" Kmoch was a self-taught cartoonist and caricaturist who worked for the satirical magazines Muskete and Simplicissimus, until he joined the Social Democratic newspaper Das Kleine Blatt in 1929. Kmoch designed this poster for the 1922 Viennese International Chess Congress, one of the first great tournaments after World War I, including all of the chess stars of the day. The black and white rooks stand monumentally like castles marking the entrance of Vienna, with a rendering of the Trade Fair Palace below the text.
