SCARCE EARLY PROOF LYONEL FEININGER
Das Tor, Ribnitz.

Woodcut on oatmeal-tan carbon-copy paper, 1918. 145x142 mm; 53/4x55/8 inches, full margins. First state (of 2), before the long vertical crack in the block. One of only approximately 5 proofs in the first state (there were only approximately 4 proofs in the second and final state). Signed in pencil, lower left, with the artist's work number "1807" in pencil, lower center recto. With the "Staate Kunst-Sammlungen Weimar" blind stamp lower center recto. A superb, dark and evenly printed impression of this extremely scarce, early woodcut.

We have not found another impression at auction in the past 20 years. Prasse lists only one other first state proof in a public collection: the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Prasse 10.
