La Serviette au Cou.
Lithograph, 16x12 inch image on larger paper. Signed and numbered 2/25 in pencil, lower margin. 1931.
"This is a lithograph, drawn on stone, during an early stay in Paris. I lived and painted in Paris during most of the Twenties, occasionally returning to New York to "look around" and to add to my collection of contemporary money. In Paris, I shared a bungalow in the Rue Vavin with two other artists. We took it on an eight-year lease for 2500 francs a year, which at the time worked out to about $33 apiece. (Coffee was one cent!) That's also when I grew a beard; there was no way to shave - our tap was always frozen. By the time I left France, for Bali by way of Tahiti, I'd lost my early infatuation with painting, with sculpture, even with so-called fine arts. My real satisfaction had become the image of pure line." HOL/48
