Langland, William (c. 1332-1386)
The Vision of Pierce Plowman.

London: Printed by Owen Rogers, 1561.

Fourth edition, issued without Pierce the Ploughman's Crede; quarto; printed in black letter throughout; lacking four text leaves [signature X] and thereby the text between Passus 14 line 203, "The fiend followeth them all and fondeth them to help," and line 69 of Passus 15, "That is: Non plus sapere quam oportet sapere"; bound in full crushed light brown 19th century morocco, tooled and ruled in gilt and blind with oak leaf motifs on boards and spine by Bedford, binding rubbed; expert paper repair to the bottom inner and outer blank margin of the second leaf, just skirting the text; ex libris Cardiff Castle and Charles H. Babcock, with bookplates; 7 5/8 x 5 3/8 in.

The Crede of Pierce Plowman, which was meant to accompany the Vision is (as usual) lacking in the present copy. "Its rarity, about a half-dozen copies have survived, is probably due to contemporary proscription because of its Wycliffte doctrine." (Pforzheimer)
