Julien Stanislas studied under the first professor of Chinese at the College de France beginning in 1824. He is regarded as one of the most prolific and respected sinologists in French scholarship. This translation was a vital touchstone for the first English edition by John Chalmers published in 1868. The Tao Te Ching has since been translated into Western languages more than 250 times. Scarce at auction.
