Laurencin was an influential member of the Paris avant-garde during the early 20th century. Like many women artists, Laurencin first studied porcelain painting and later attended the Académie Humbert in Paris to study oil painting. In Paris, Laurencin exhibited with the Cubists at the vanguard Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne. She had romantic relationships with men, including poet Guillaume Apollinaire, and women. Her work, influenced by the Fauves, is described as feminine; she often worked in pastel colors and softened, harmonious curves.
