Le Page du Pratz, Antoine Simon (d. 1775)
The History of Louisiana, or of the Western Parts of Virginia and Carolina.

London: for T. Becket and P.A. De Hondt, 1763.

First edition in English, two 12mo volumes, I: [pi]2, 4, a12, b13, B-Q12, R4; II: [pi]2, A2, B-M12, N4; half-titles present in both volumes, illustrated with two folding engraved maps; bound in contemporary boards, amateurishly rebacked; waterstaining to gutters of both volumes, 6 3/4 x 5 in.

ESTC T141263; Howes L-266; Sabin 40122.

This first edition in English coincided, not coincidentally, with ownership changes affecting French possession of the Louisiana Territories. In 1762, France secretly ceded Louisiana to Spain by means of the Treaty of Fountainbleau. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris granted Cananda and Louisiana east of the Mississippi to Great Britain.
