Silver gelatin black-and-white photograph distributed as a press photo in October of 1920, with typed caption, pencil inscriptions and rubber stamps on verso; some folds, chipping to corners, some surface color added by hand for publication; taken during the 1920 summer outing of the Mountaineers, a climbing club based in Washington state, on a climbing trip to Mount Olympus from July 31 through August 21, 1920; the identical image appears in an album of photos compiled and presumably taken by Sander Lilly during the climb and currently held at the University of Washington; 6 3/4 x 6 1/4

Elizabeth Sander Lilly was born in New Jersey. She arrived in Washington in the late teens or early twenties. In 1929 she married Sidney Alan Crysler in Seattle. Sander Lilly wrote poetry and prose for The Overland Monthly, The Mountaineer, the eponymous journal of her club, and other west coast journals of an outdoorsy nature. In addition to participating in climbs and writing, she also published original photographs of mountain landscapes, camp life, and portraits of her fellow climbers.
