Lowengrund, Margaret (1902-1957)
The Nest.

New York: Printed by the artist, 1953.

Color lithograph on Rives with full margins; signed, titled, dated and numbered 4/10 along the lower margin in pencil; 410 x 405 mm; 16 x 16 in.

In 1951, Lowengrund opened the Contemporaries Graphic Arts Center, an unprecedented gallery and print studio meant to serve artists of all media, including students and collectors. By promoting prints alongside paintings and sculpture, Lowengrund called attention to their importance, discarding the prescribed hierarchy of media. The Contemporaries studio specialized in lithography and etching and offered basic printmaking instruction along with guidance on edition printing for artists. It notably pre-dated the flurry of printmaking activity that came along in the next decade, and was at the vanguard of burgeoning independent print workshops in the U.S.

Lowengrund has recently been the subject of a groundbreaking exhibition "A Model Workshop," at the Print Center New York. Curated by Christina Weyl and Lauren Rosenblum, their research brings Lowengrund's life and achievements, as well as her far-reaching legacy to light.
