Loyer, Pierre le (1550-1634)
A Treatise of Specters or Straunge Sights, Visions and Apparitions Appearing Sensibly unto Men.

London: Printed by Val. S[immes] for Mathew Lownes, 1605.

First edition in English, quarto, translated from the 1605 French original, Discours des Spectres by Zachary Jones, woodcut printer's device to title page; A3 recto without the translator's name; bound in later calf, rebacked with cloth; fore-margin and bottom corner of leaf 90 [Aa2] torn away with loss of sidenotes and bottom paragraph, the page very professionally mended, all text restored in excellent pen facsimile, 7 1/8 x 5 1/4 in.

Le Loyer was a demonologist from western France, publishing his first book on the subject in 1586. As early modern thinkers adopted the scientific method and strove to understand the nature of objective reality, their work on witchcraft and demonology inevitably leads to meditations on mental illness and abberant or anti-social human behavior and the causes thereof.
