Home to the castle where Queen Isabella granted Christopher Columbus the financing he needed on his trip when he "discovered" America, Segovia is also the site of the great Roman aqueduct. Built in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D., the aqueduct was originally constructed to bring potable water to the city from a source 18 kilometers away. The freestanding, arched section of the aqueduct covers about one kilometer and at its highest point reaches 100 feet into the air.
