Sabena (Societe Autonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aerienne) began flying in 1923. Originally, its routes connected Belgium to her colonial interests in the Congo. By the late 1920s, however, the company's routes began to expand and incorporated travel to London. Working together with Air France and Lufthansa as well as a network of subsidiary airlines (Baltic Air Express and Nord Air Express), Sabena reached out to Copenhagen and Malmo in 1931, Berlin in 1932, and by 1936, through Nord Air Express, also had connecting flights to Stockholm.
