M. LENZ ZEICHNET DIE SECHSTE KRIEGSANLEIHE. 1917.
29 3/4x21 1/4 inches. Hofl. B. Weiner, Wien.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears in margins; horizontal fold.
The English legend of St. George, an Asian-style dragon, and a "peculiarly Austrian feeling for heraldic design" (IWM p. 39), combine to create a dramatic image of a knight on horseback, in red and gray, slaying a dragon depicted in shades of green; against a yellow flag. Although the legend of St. George is British, both sides during the First World War used the imagery to convey the theme of good versus evil. IWM cover and p. 39, Darracott p.28, Rickards 64.
