The South Indian Railway was formed in 1874 as the result of a merger between the Great Southern Indian Railway and the Karnatak Railway Company. Renowned for its architecture, and sometimes referred to as the Athens of the East, Madura (or Madurai) is home to the exquisite Meenakshi Temple, and is one of India's oldest cities. Here in the shadow of the exquisite temple a joyful festival, complete with music and sacred elephants, is parading its way through the streets.
