Another of India's largest and most sacred temples, the Arunachaleswarar Temple covers 24 acres. Pilgrims file in every month on the full moon. The hill behind the temple is considered to be a manifestation of Shiva, who in legend appeared on this spot as a pillar of fire. To commemorate this event, a fire is lit on the mountain in conjunction with the full moon during the Festival of Light, usually coinciding with the beginning of December. Thus the Hill of the Holy Beacon is not a volcano, as the poster would have us believe.
