MAARON GLEMBY (DATES UNKNOWN) NORTHERN PACIFIC / THE INDIAN COUNTRY.
40 1/4x29 3/4 inches, 102x76 cm. Brown & Bigelow, St. Paul, Minnesota.
Condition B+: restored losses at edges; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and overpainting in margins and image.
In the style of Winold Reiss, Glemby created portraits of Native Americans that could be seen along the Northern Pacific route. Built between the Great Lakes and Puget Sound, the Northern Pacific Railroad was instrumental in opening up the American Northwest. Running through Montana and North Dakota, the "Main Street of the Northwest" passed through lands that had been wrested from Native peoples, including the Lakota, Flatheads and Oglala Sioux.
