Additional Details

The list of Madison's payments includes "Trees & fruits shipped from N. York," amounting to $30, and a subscription to Philosophical Transactions, $3. Madison converts the sum of payments shown in dollars to British crowns and then to French livres, so that the payments total can be compared to the debt using the same currency.
During the late 1780s, while he served as Ambassador to France, Jefferson sent many books to Madison, some of which were referenced in works penned by Madison, including his "Notes on Government," 1791.
