Scattered light foxing and spotting, writing and publisher's stamp on verso from The Century Company Art Department with manuscript information explaining the image was drawn for the April 1894 article entitled "Driven Out of Tibet."

Additional Details

A striking portrait of Rockhill, Orientalist and diplomat who made several scientific expeditions for the Smithsonian Institution in Mongolia and Tibet during 1888-92. He then became a special agent in China after the Boxer insurrection of 1900 and later served as U. S. Minister to China and Ambassador to Russia and Turkey as well as authoring several books on Far Eastern studies.
