A prodigious childhood artist, Hoffman (1887-1966) was enrolled in the Art Students League in New York at the age of 14. In 1910, she went with her mother to Paris, where she tried repeatedly to become one of Rodin's students. After several years, she was finally admitted as a student in Rodin's studio. By 1915, she had set up her own studio in Paris and there became a well known sculptor and foundry specialist. She returned to New York later in life and continued to create sculpture until her death.
