MAN RAY.
La Femme Portative. Alternate version of a drawing featuring a woman, a coil, and an inverted cone to accompany the poem of the same name by Paul Eluard, in their collaborative work, "Les Mains Libres" (Paris, 1937.) Pen and ink on thick, cream wove paper. 413x292 mm; 16 1/4x11 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in lower left image.
Provenance: Purchased in 1986 directly from retired Montparnasse art dealer Gil Romero. Romero worked for Paul Durand-Ruel in the 1920s, became an independent dealer in the 1930s, and amassed a collection of works on paper directly from artists and through buying at Druout and other houses, mostly before WW2. Romero purchased this work prior to 1945 and disposed of most of his collection through direct sales in the 1980s.
