It was a well-established tradition for the École des Beaux Arts to mock academic painters by including visual references to Antiquity (from which they drew inspiration for their work) in the promotion for their various festivals and costume balls. Here, the depicted bacchanal evokes the imagery on an ancient Greek vase. As with many of their posters, this one was designed by a student (in this particular instance, a student who never went on to become a famous artist). The ball was part of the Fêtes de Paris, which was in turn advertised by Cassandre and many of France's other most famous poster designers.
