Mompó (1927-1990) was one of the most prominent mid-twentieth-century figures in Spain linked to abstraction. Born in Valencia, Spain, he studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios of Valencia and the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes of Valencia before traveling to Paris where he met Eduardo Chillida and Pablo Palazuelo. Influenced by Informalism and Abstract Expressionism, Mompó's work serves as an interpretation of landscapes and he has stated: "I paint loose shapes surrounded by white that exist and can subsist in liberty, while wholly participating with nature." In 1968 he was selected for the Venice Biennale where he won the UNESCO Prize. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and the Museum of Fine Arts, Valencia, among others.
