MARC ATTALI & JACQUES DELFAU

Les Erotiques du Regard.
Paris: Andre Balland, 1968 [printed in Nancy by the Humblot Press], first edition, folio, illustrated throughout; bound in publisher's illustrated boards; publisher's prospectus inserted, light wear and rubbing to binding. 273x349 mm; 10¾x13¾ inches.

Photographer Attali's exploitive images of women suggest that they were captured furtively, without consent of the sitters, thereby faithfully informing from the vantage point of the male gaze. The images are paired with concrete poetry clipped from printed sources in the tradition of the cut-up technique of writing pioneered by the Dadaists and further employed by Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs.

"A thoughtful book that concentrates on looking, yet is light-hearted and serious at one and the same time, which means that it both engages and disengages with the erotic in an interesting, thoroughly ambiguous, complex and tantalizing way." (Quoted from volume one of Martin Parr & Gerry Badger's The Photobook: A History Volume, New York: Phaidon Press, 2004).
