MARC CHAGALL (after)
The Praying Jew (Rabbi of Vitebsk).

Color etching and aquatint on Chine collé, 1937. 500x385 mm; 19 3/4x15 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 93/100 in pencil, lower margin. Published by Éditions Apollo, Paris. A very good impression with strong colors.

This etching was done after the same-titled oil painting, 1914, that Chagall then procuded two additional versions of in 1923, one of which is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. Chagall created this portrait in his hometown of Vitebsk, Belarus; the sitter is a peasant whom the artist invited to sit for the portrait, wearing the artist's father's prayer clothes in the portrayal of a rabbi.
