MARC CHAGALL
Anne invoque l'Eternel.

Etching with aquatint and hand coloring in watercolor, 1931-39. 274x235 mm; 107/8x91/4 inches, full margins. Initialed and numbered 74/100 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Haasen, Paris. Published by Tériade, Paris. From the Bible. A very good impression.

The majority of Chagall's etched work dates from the early part of his career and consists primarily of illustrations he made for several important artist's books. This and the proceeding lot are from a portfolio illustrating the Old Testament containing 105 etchings by Chagall. Apart from Georges Rouault (see lot 31), Chagall's use of Biblical subject matter was unsurpassed by any other major printmaker of the 20th-century. Like Rembrandt, whose etched work is dominated by Biblical subjects, Chagall represented the subjects of religious prints in an unpretentious, down-to-earth manner. His heavy working of the plate also owes something to Rembrandt's complex linear style. Cramer 30.
