MARC CHAGALL
Femme Oiseau.

Color lithograph, 1950. 430x560 mm; 17x22 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 13/50 in pencil, lower margin. Published by Maeght, Paris. A very good impression of this scarce lithograph.

Chagall (1887-1985) was an early modernist; born in Russia he worked much of his career in France, associated with several major artistic movements and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and printmaking. He developed a wide repertoire of individual motifs, combining Russian folkloric symbols with Parisian avant-garde, among which are ghostly figures floating in the sky, fiddlers dancing roofs, and livestock and figures shown upside down. Chagall did not perceive his work to be associated with any school or movement. Nevertheless his animal/human hybrids and airborne phantoms would become a formative influence on Surrealism as it developed through the 20th century. Mourlot 49.
