This early etching, a self portrait of the artist at the easel, is derived from Chagall's Cubist-inspired oil, Self portrait with Muse, private collection. Chagall in turn based the composition on El Greco's The Annunciation, oil, circa 1576, now in the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. Kornfeld 44.
