MARC CHAGALL
Peintre au palette.

Blue and red crayons on cream wove paper, 1978. 330x260 mm; 13x10 1/4 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed Vava, Vitebsk, St. Paul and Merci Charles et Bridgette in red crayon and black ink. Drawn on the title page of Marc Chagall Peintures Recentes 1967-1977.

The inscriptions "Vitebsk" and "St. Paul (de Vence)" in reference the town in which Chagall was born and the town in which he lived at the time he dedicated the work and in which he later died. He is buried at the Saint Paul-de-Vence cemetery.

The dedication is to Charles and Brigitte Marq, master stained glass artisans whom Chagall collaborated with numerous times in completing special commissions for his Jerusalem Windows series.
