That Luang is the National Symbol of Laos and is featured on the country's National Emblem. It was constructed in 1566 by King Say Setthathirath in a typical Lao style and is one of the best known That<> or stupas in Laos. Vientiane is the capital city of Laos, and home to many histoircial temples. Vat Phra Keo was constructed in 1565 by King Xayasethathirath. It used to house the Emerald Buddha, now in Bangkok. From 1893, when Thailand ceeded territory to France in an attempt to keep herself free from foreign domination, until 1945 when the Japanese took control (briefly towards the end of World War II), Laos was a French colony.
