MARC SEVERIN (1906 - ?) IMPERIAL AIRWAYS. 1936.
391/2x45 inches. McCorquodale & Co., London.
Condition A-: restoration and repaired tears in margins.
The more of Severin's images that appear in the marketplace, the more he can be considered one of the best poster designers of the Art Deco era. Born in Belgium, Severin moved to London after the war, where he became the Art Director for the A. R. Casson advertising agency. He also did freelance designs for two of the largest corporate patrons of graphic design in Britain: Shell and the London Underground. In this image, which has never come to auction before, Severin plays with the perspective and situates the viewer's eye in a way that makes the plane appear gigantic. This exceptional image is to airline posters what Cassandre's Normandy is to ocean liner images.
